How Birth Stress is Relieved in Cattles?

Birth is the most stressful condition for cattle. Therefore many points such as the place of birth, cattle's nutrition within this period, the intervention to the birth, etc. have great importance with regards to the next milking period and breeding. 

The cattle:

•  Should be taken to a place which is clean, spacious, and large with lots of bases.

•  Birth compartment should not be passed by frequently, no noise should be made.

•  When the birth starts, heifers should not be intervened for 2-3 hours and cows should not be intervened for 1-2 hours.

•  If required, the intervention should be made by a single person in a calm manner and in synchronization with the straining movements of the cow.

•  In unusual birth positions where the calf comes out reversed and its head and arms are in the wrong position, veterinary should be called without loosing time.

•  A bucket of warm water should be given to the cow after the birth.

•  In order to support energy metabolism, it propylene glycol should be give as a drink for 5 days.
